A Frosty Tasty Eggnog Smoothie; Just as good -only healthier!

Eggnog is a staple in many homes during the holidays, and we couldn’t possible make a Christmas Smoothie Calendar without it!

This frosty version cuts out the heavy cream and the alcohol, though keeping the well-known and loved festive flavour. We’re even adding some fantastic nutritional benefits!

A very healthy eggnog

Yoghurt, whether regular or dairy-free, contains the wonderful benefits of probiotics. You can also opt for kefir, which is a fermented yoghurt alternative that can be made from home using cows milk or even soy milk.

Bananas contribute with potassium and fantastic soluble fibre, which is wonderful for your tummy amongst all the calorific treats throughout the silly season.

Eggs are nature’s very own multivitamin, and the yolk is jam-packed with nutrients! The egg white provides healthy protein, and coconut not only tastes lovely, but is also rich in fibre, VitC, E, B1, B3, B5, and B6. In addition it’s full of minerals such as selenium, iron, calcium and magnesium

Cinnamon and nutmeg add more than just a holiday flavour, they help with blood sugar control, have anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, mood-enhancing properties, detoxing abilities, and provide a boost of calcium, iron and manganese.

To make this festive treat you’ll need:

  • 1 cup yoghurt or kefir
  • 2 very ripe bananas (make them frozen if you’d like your eggnog to be cold)
  • 1 tbsp coconut milk or cream
  • 1 egg yolk from pastured hens (make sure the eggs you use are safe to eat raw!) Keep the eggwhite!
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup (or 2 medjool dates for paleo option)
  • 1 tsp organic vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • a pinch of cinnamon
  • Optional: 1 eggwhite

  1. Blend all the ingredients except the eggwhite.
  2. Whip the eggwhite in a separate bowl, until stiff peaks form, then fold it carefully into the smoothie. This step can be skipped if you’d rather drink the smoothie as is.
  3. Sprinkle with a pinch of cinnamon, or serve with a cinnamon stick as garnish!
