Kick off the Silly Season with this Yummy Pumpkin Pie Protein Punch Smoothie Bowl!
Who doesn’t love a pumpkin pie?
To kick off our smoothielicious advent calendar, we give you an old favourite in new and fresh wrapping: the Pumpkin Pie’s healthy little brother!
I really love this smoothie; it actually has that delicious pumpkin pie flavour to it so you can get your Pumpkin Pie fix, but minus the calories! 🙂
We were playing around back and forth with just how much of each ingredient to add, and how to get the spice combo just right to match that Christmassy taste, whilst making it wonderfully nutritious. I think we nailed it!
Essential nutrients wrapped in deliciousness
Pumpkin is not only tasty, but wonderfully rich in vital antioxidants, such as the flavonoid poly-phenolic lutein and xanthin, and of course carotenes in abundance!
Pumpkin has a very low calorific yield, at only 26 calories per 100 grams, and it contains no saturated fat or cholesterol. It is packed with vitamin A, C and E, and is a great source of B-complex vitamins like folates, niacin, and vitamin B-6. One cup of pumpkin contains twice the recommended daily intake of vitamin A, which promotes good vision, as well as the formation and maintenance of healthy skin, teeth and bones.
In addition to all those amazing qualities, pumpkin can also boast with a whopping 3 grams of fibre per cup. A recent Swedish study showed that women who ate a high-fibre diet had 25% lower risk of heart disease versus women who ate a low-fibre diet(1)
This smoothie also contains avocado, which is said to have the highest protein content of any fruit. Avocado contains about 3 times more lutein than other common vegetables and fruits. Lutein helps protect against certain types of cancer, and reduces the risk of macular degeneration. (You can read more about the benefits of avocado in this post about the banana & avocado smoothie)
If the above mentioned are not good enough reasons to dig in to this very tasty smoothie, I might also mention that flaxseed is said to protect your ticker!
King Charlemagne believed so strongly in the power of flaxseed that he passed a law which required his people to eat it!
Flaxseed is absolutely packed with Omega-3 essential fatty acids: only 2 tablespoons of this amazing superfood contains a whopping 3.5g of plant Omega-3!
Epidemiological studies and trials suggest that the essential fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is important in the pathogenesis and prevent of cardiovascular disease (2). 57% of the fatty acids in flaxseed is alpha-linoleic acid (ALA).
How to make it
Top this delectable, healthy smoothie with a dusting of nutmeg, and a sprinkle of flaxseed. This is a rich, creamy and velvety smooth little treat which is sure to bring out that Christmas feeling!
